Soccer Rules

The official rules of soccer which are implemented and revised by FIFA, the body that governs World Soccer, are called the “Laws of the Game”.  The “Laws of the Game” covers all factors of the game including field size, ball size, game duration, number of players per team and all violations in the game among other things. The rules are quite extensive and cover 17 sections.

The 17 sections cover the following elements of the game:

Law 1- Field Dimensions
Law 2- Ball Size
Law 3- Number of Players
Law 4- Player’s Equipment
Law 5- Referees
Law 6- Assistant Referee
Law 7- Duration of the Game
Law 8- Start of Play
Law 9- Ball in and out of play
Law 10- Method of scoring
Law 11- Offsides
Law 12- Fouls and Misconduct
Law 13- Free Kicks
Law 14- Penalty Kick
Law 15- Throw in
Law 16- Goal Kick
Law 17- Corner Kick

Youth organizations and soccer leagues usually adapt the same rules but with some adjustments.  These modifications are made to the rules to fit children and other recreational players.

The usual changes that are made to the rules refer to the field sizes, game lengths and other factors so that the game can become appropriate for children, women and other players.  Game lengths are usually shortened, field sizes are made smaller and other simple modifications that make the game more interesting for children. The modifications on the FIFA Laws are usually included in the rule book of the particular league.

Youth soccer rules are modified versions of the FIFA Laws and make the game more fun and easier for the children. The soccer rules for little children also make learning the game easier to learn for kids who are just starting to learn the sport.  The adjustments in the rules are also made so that the rules become easy to understand.  The “Laws of the Game”, because of its extensive coverage can be difficult to understand especially for children and young teens.  Youth soccer rules defined by the leagues usually use words that are easy to understand and really used in the game.  Some of the terms used in the FIFA rules are not clearly defined and you would need a good index to truly understand all 70 pages of the Laws.

Coaches for youth leagues aside from using the modified rules for their league usually come up with even more simplified instructions or guides for their own teams.
